Johnny Chan, dit Johnny « Orient Express » Chan est l'un des joueurs de poker professionnel les plus titré au monde.
Biographie
Né en 1957 à Canton, Chine. Il déménage souvent pendant son enfance, d’abord à Hong Kong en 1962 puis vers les États-Unis, à Phoenix en 1968 et enfin à Houston en 1973, où sa famille posséde des restaurants. Destiné à travailler dans l’affaire familiale, à l’âge de 21 ans, il interrompt ses études en hôtellerie et restauration à la « University of Houston » et part pour Las Vegas pour devenir joueur de poker professionnel.
Il acquiert la célébrité à la fin des années 80, en gagnant deux fois de suite le championnat du monde de poker (World Series Of Poker) à Las Vegas. D’abord en 1987 contre Frank Henderson, puis en 1988 contre Erik Seidel. En 1989, Jerry Buss, propriétaire de l’équipe de basket des Lakers de Los Angeles, lui promet alors une bague du championnat NBA s'il est capable de gagner les WSOP une troisième fois de suite, et Chan est en passe de renouveler l’exploit, mais perdra en finale face au jeune Phil Hellmuth Jr.
En 1998, Johnny Chan devient le plus médiatique des joueurs de poker en faisant une apparition dans le film « Les Joueurs » (Rounders en VO), où il tient son propre rôle. En 2002, Johnny Chan entre au Poker Hall of Fame et en 2005, il gagne son dixième bracelet WSOP et devient, avec Doyle Brunson et Phil Hellmuth, le joueur le plus titré.
Johnny Chan est connu pour avoir une orange porte-bonheur devant lui à la table, et après son deuxième titre, de nombreux joueurs se mirent aussi à poser des fruits sur la table en espérant augmenter leur chance de réussite. Pourtant, si Johnny Chan a toujours une orange devant lui, c’est que fumer était autorisé pendant la plupart des tournois de poker. Étant non fumeur, il humait régulièrement la peau de l’orange pour couvrir l'odeur du tabac.
En plus d’être joueur de poker, Johnny Chan possède un fast food au Stratosphere Hotel à Las Vegas et mène aussi une carrière de consultant pour les casinos et fabricants de jeu. De plus, il écrit pour le magazine « Card Player » et a aujourd’hui pour principal projet d’ouvrir son propre casino.

Johnny Chan est un des noms les plus connus dans le milieu du poker. Il est une légende dans le monde du poker pour avoir remporté dix bracelets d’or (à égalité avec Brunson), mais le plus impressionnant est que deux de ces bracelets ont été remportés à la suite, dans les événements de 1987 et 1988. Etonnement, il a presque gagné 1989 également mais a finalement terminé à la deuxième place derrière Phil Hellmuth. Il n’est pas seulement connu des joueurs de poker mais aussi des amateurs de cinéma puisqu’il a joué son propre rôle de meilleur joueur de poker au monde dans le film "Rounders". Ce film contient une retransmission de la victoire de Chan contre Erik Seidel dans les World Series de 1988. Chan, surnommé "l’Orient Express", a obtenu une suite lors du flop et a incité Erik à faire tapis avec une paire de reines.
Chan a déménagé avec sa famille de Hong Kong à Phoenix en 1968. Ils ont ensuite déménagé à Houston où sa famille est propriétaires de plusieurs restaurants. Il semblait destiné à prendre la succession familiale mais le poker l’a entraîné dans une autre direction. Il a commencé à jouer au poker au début des années 80 et n’a pas arrêté depuis. Quand il a commencé le poker, il était aussi un joueur de bowling passionné. Il avait l’habitude de cacher certaines de ses sorties poker en disant qu’il était au bowling.
Les dix bracelets d’or des World Series of Poker ont été remportés lors des deux événements de 1987 et 1988, du Limit Holdem de 1985, du Seven-Card Stud de 1994, du Deuce to Seven Draw de 1997, du Omaha Pot Limit de 2000, du No Limit Holdem et Pot Limit Holdem de 2003 et le dernier bracelet a été gagné lors d’une partie entre anciens détenteurs du bracelet. L’événement était une série de matchs en un contre un et les deux joueurs finaux étaient Chan et Phil Hellmuth. Cette fois-ci, c’est Chan qui l’a emporté. Quand j’ai fait des recherches sur ses victoires, j’ai été impressionnée par la variété des types de jeux qu’il a remporté. Cela confirme l’idée de beaucoup qu’il est l’un des joueurs de poker les plus complets au monde. Il est entré au Poker Hall of Fame en 2002.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Johnny was the best No-Limit Hold'em tournament player in the world. Since then, he has used his tournament success as a vehicle to get himself involved in different business ventures. He is still a skilled player, but he plays very impatiently as if he is late for a meeting.
He used to be very weak at Limit poker, but he improved his Limit game significantly in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is probably surprising that I listed Pot-Limit Omaha as his best game, but I am going by results, and his best results over the last few years in side games (and even in the WSOP) have been in Pot-Limit Omaha.

Amusing Anecdote
Johnny is one of the few players whose superstitions seem to prevent him from steaming. If he loses a hand, he often asks for a deck change. If he loses with a certain dealer he often takes it personally, sometimes getting into it with him. If he keeps losing, he quits.
Once he said to me, "I've never lost more than two hands with the same deck and I've never lost more than three hands with the same dealer."
