Doyle Brunson est né le 10 août 1933 à Longworth, une petite ville du Texas. Très tôt, il prend l’habitude de courir de grandes distances pour aller dans les villes voisines, et devient un athlète prometteur. Il joue au basket-ball, fait partie de l’équipe des All State Texas et court régulièrement le mile. Après avoir joué chez les Texas Interscholastic Track Meet en 1950, il est repéré par les Lakers de Minneapolis. Une blessure à la jambe, lors d’un travail d’été, met fin à son espoir de devenir joueur de basket-ball professionnel. Doyle Brunson, obligé d’abandonner le sport, poursuit des études et obtient un Master's degree in administrative education.
Il jouait déjà au poker avant sa blessure, lors de parties de draw (poker fermé) et trouvait ce jeu « faible ». Après sa blessure, il commence à jouer beaucoup plus souvent. Les parties lui permettent de payer ses dépenses durant ses études jusqu’à l’obtention de son master en 1954. L’année suivante, il trouve son premier emploi en tant que vendeur d’équipement de bureau. Mais le premier jour, il est invité à une partie de 7 stud (voir (en) Stud poker), où il gagne plus d’un mois de salaire en moins de trois heures. Il démissionne alors rapidement et entame sa carrière de joueur professionnel.

Doyle Brunson commence à jouer dans des parties illégales à Fort Worth (Texas) avec son ami, Dwaine Hamilton. Rapidement, ils se déplacent dans les États voisins (Louisiane, Oklahoma) pour participer à des parties plus importantes et rencontrent Amarillo Slim et Sailor Roberts, deux joueurs professionnels. Hamilton retourne à Fort Worth pendant que Brunson, Slim et Roberts, voyagent, jouent au poker et passent le temps au golf. Ils mettent tout leur argent en commun pour jouer et au bout de 6 ans, décident de faire leur premier voyage à Las Vegas, où ils perdront tout (un montant à 6 chiffres). Ils décident donc d’arrêter de jouer ensemble tout en demeurant amis. Doyle Brunson s’installe définitivement à Las Vegas et continue de jouer.
En 1976, il devient champion du monde en remportant la finale des WSOP (World Series of Poker) contre Jesse Alto et récidive l’année suivante contre Gary Berland.
En 1979, il écrit un livre, Super System, considéré depuis comme la bible du poker qui a influencé la manière de jouer de plusieurs générations de joueurs.
En 2004, il écrit Super System 2. A course in power poker, une nouvelle version de son best-seller, remis à jour et tenant compte de l’évolution du jeu.
En 2005, il devient, avec Johnny Chan, le joueur le plus titré des WSOP en remportant son dixième bracelet.
En 2006, il donne son nom à une étape du prestigieux World Poker Tour.

Doyle is the Arnold Palmer of poker: the king. A fiery competitor at over 70 years of age, Doyle remains one of the top five players in the world. He was once strictly a No-Limit specialist, but he probably became a top Limit player when he was working on his Super/System book. People who don't know him are amazed when he makes it to the final table of one of the few tournaments he enters each year. He is still a better player than all of the players on the tournament trail.

Amusing Anecdote
When I first started playing with Doyle, we'd play in out-of-the-way places because some of the well-known players didn't want public scrutiny. I would ask Doyle about the poker game, but he would always talk about the food spread at the game. He weighed 400 pounds and he'd say to me, “Look at those pork chops” or “Tell me if you've ever tasted a better sweet potato than those.” He seemed to get much more delight from eating than playing poker.

Il n’y a qu’un seul mot pour décrire Texas Dolly Doyle Brunson : légende. Doyle joue depuis de nombreuses années et est un des joueurs les plus accompli, il a gagné dix bracelets des World Series of Poker, et continue à gagner des cash games au plus hautes limites et joue au poker depuis un demi siècle.
Doyle est né à Longworth, Texas le 10 Août, 1933. Il a joué au basket-ball, baseball et a fait de l’athlétisme. Il a été choisi comme l’un des cinq meilleurs joueurs de basket-ball de l’état du Texas. Il était aussi celui qui avait le meilleur temps par mile. De nombreux collèges lui ont fait des offres, il a décidé d’aller à Hardin-Simmons. Les Lakers (alors à Minneapolis) étaient très intéressés par Doyle jusqu’à ce qu’il se blesse au genou à deux différents endroits. Il ne pouvait alors plus faire du sport au même niveau dont il avait l’habitude. Le poker a réussi à satisfaire sa nature compétitive. Il a fini ses études et reçu un DESS en Education/administration. Il a essayé de chercher un travail mais il a réalisé qu’il gagnait plus en jouant au poker que s’il avait un travail « normal ». S’il est connu pour jouer au poker, il est assez connu pour parier sur de nombreux événement. Son pari le plus célèbre est quand il a parié 1 million de dollars avec un ami qu’il réussirait à perdre 50 kilos. Il a gagné ce pari.
Doyle épousa sa femme Louise en 1962. Ils ont 4 enfants, Todd compris (un autre joueur de poker à succès), Pam, Cheryl et Doyla. Doyla est morte pendant son sommeil suite à un problème cardiaque quand elle avait 18 ans. Il pense à elle tous les jours mais dit qu’il est en paix avec Dieu. Doyle vit actuellement à Las Vegas. Il a aussi une maison à Flathead Lake dans le Montana.
Les nouveaux joueurs peuvent trouver plein d’information sur le poker mais beaucoup de personnes considèrent le livre de Doyle « Super System » comme la bible du poker. Il y a des sections sur les différents jeux écrits par les meilleurs joueurs. Il a un autre ouvrage « According to Doyle” qui est un recueil de tous les articles qu’il a écrit pour le Gambling Times Magazine. Dans certains de ces articles, il dit que tous les joueurs ont une obligation de se conduire de manière honorable, c’est une chose que j’admire chez Doyle. Il a récemment ouvert une nouvelle salle de poker en ligne, Doyle's Room.
Les exploits de Doyle sont sidérants. Il était à la table finale du premier tournoi de World Poker Tour, gagné le tournoi Legends of Poker Season Three WPT et en 2004 il était un des trois premier à entrer dans le Poker Walk of Fame, avec Gus Hansen et l’acteur James Garner. Il a gagné 10 bracelets des World Series. Ses titres sont Deuce to Seven Draw 1976, Seven-Card Stud Split 1977, Seven Card Stud 1978, Mixed Doubles 1979, No Limit Holdem 1991, Seven Card Stud 1998, H.O.R.S.E 2003, et deux titres de champion en 1976 et 1977. Pour ces deux titres consécutives il a gagné avec la même main : full house (brelan de 10 avec paire de deux, lui donnant le surnom de "Doyle Brunson."
